Commonly known as the festival of lights, this Hindu festival
occurs in the month of Kartik and is celebrated all over India. Dhanteras may be
considered as the first day of diwali Many people purchase gold coins and other gold items
or jewelry on this day. On Chaturdashi, Laxmi is worshipped. Laxmi is the Goddess of
wealth and prosperity and she brings good luck and happiness to all.
To some, Diwali may be all about new clothes and holidays and crackers and the festive
season, but behind this great festival lies and ancient story. Many years ago, after Lord
Ram returned to Ayodhya with Sita and his brother Laxman, the whole city of Ayodhya
rejoiced at his homecoming. The city was brightly lit with lights and this day came to be
celebrated as Diwali.
Around Diwali time, all houses are cleaned and new items purchased. The children and
adults both make merry and enjoy themselves bursting crackers. Especially on Diwali night,
one can see the sky brightly lit with crackers of all shapes sizes and colours. Beautiful
diyas and lanterns decorate doorways or entrances. Lights are hung from banisters and in
the balconies of houses. People make a beautiful rangoli pattern outside their house.
Marigold flowers are also used as decoration. Sweets are bought and gifts distributed
amongst relatives and friends. The entire country is transformed into a beautiful and
majestic place for the few days in and around diwali.
On this day, the Hindu calendar year comes to an end and a New Year begins. A puja is also
performed of the account books. Towards the latter part of the diwali celebrations, Bhai
Dooj is celebrated. At this time, the sisters invite their brother's home and treat them
to a feast and pay respect to them.
On diwali day, people adorn themselves with new clothes and friends exchange gifts and dry
fruits. People visit their relatives and the entire atmosphere is filled with joy and
excitement.
