Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December every year and
it marks the birthday of Jesus Christ.
During the reign of Emperor Caesar Augustus there was to be a counting of all the Jews in
the empire. In a small town called Nazareth, lived a couple named Joseph and Mary. Every
Jew was asked to register themselves by the 25th of December. In order to register
themselves, this couple made their way to Bethlehem. The entire town of Bethlehem was full
of visitors who had all come to register themselves. Due to the large rush, all the inns
were crowded and full and unfortunately, Mary and Joseph had to rest and spend the night
in a stable. Baby Jesus was born that night in the stable. Mary wrapped the little baby in
soft pieces of cloth and laid him in a manger. Shepherds that were looking after their
flock of sheep also lay nearby. Suddenly an angel appeared almost out of nowhere and
informed the shepherds about the birth of this beautiful baby boy. Guided by the bright
light of a star, the shepherds went to visit the baby.
Jesus was the Son of God and had been sent to down to earth by god. He was sent here to
guide us and to teach us how to lead a pure and holy life.
On the night before Christmas, a ceremony is held in Church and carols are sung. Christmas
trees are beautifully decorated with tiny bells and coloured balls and tinsel and stars.
The best part of Christmas for the children is the coming of Santa Claus to give them
their gifts.
Christmas pudding and custard are made. A special roast is also prepared. This is a time
of festivities and joy.
One week after Christmas, we celebrate New Year's on the 1st of January of the next
calendar year. On New Year's day we all make New Year resolutions and promise to keep
them.
