THE MAGIC CARPET

Elma the elf went to the little gift store down the street to buy her uncle a gift. Her uncle was a wizard and it was his birthday. He was becoming one hundred and fifty years old that day. The old witch at the gift store showed Elma a variety of gifts ranging from clothes to shoes to jackets to perfumes, but Elma did not like any of them.

Finally she looked up and in a corner, she saw an old dusty carpet. She asked the witch to show her the carpet. The witch brought down the carpet and opened it. It was a magic carpet, but because it was so old, it was almost thread bare and battered and had many holes in it. The colours had almost faded and the carpet smelled old and musty. The witch told Elma that once upon a time the carpet could fly to many magical places, but now it was old and could barely move about five inches above the ground. Even then Elma was willing to buy the magic carpet and the witch gave her a very good price for the carpet.

That afternoon, Elma set off towards her uncle's house for tea. When he opened the present that Elma had bought for him, he was delighted. Though he said it would require a bit of a cleaning. So the next day, Uncle and Elma sat down to clean and mend the carpet. They washed it first and then wiped it. It was brushed and then Elma used magical thread to darn all the holes. At the end of the day, the effect was amazing. The carpet looked almost as brand as new.

Uncle got down his book of carpet spells and the two of them together began experimenting with the carpet. Uncle told Elma that all she had to do was think of a place and the carpet would take her there. So Elma and her uncle sat on the carpet. Elma longed to go to the beach and play in the sand. Immediately the carpet took off, at first with a slight jerk out of the window and then it began flying smoothly. Elma and her uncle had a wonderful day at the beach swimming in the water, playing in the sand and eating ice cream.

The next day, Uncle wanted to go to the north Pole so off they sat on the magic carpet and when they reached the north pole, they played with the polar bears and the ice snails and all the wonderful creatures there. A few days later, Elma and her uncle visited the magical city of Venice and the flying carpet got converted into a little boat called a gondola and the little gondola took them all over in Venice.

From then on for many many years Elma and her uncle had many wonderful journeys and adventures on the magic carpet. It was one of the best gifts that Elma could have given her uncle for she too along with him got to visit many places and have a fantabulous time.
