WEEK 9
In this week the baby forms his organ system. Your baby's arms and legs are longer.
Hands are flexed at wrist and meet over the heart area. The baby is actually beginning to
look like a baby now as it takes on a more nature appearance. The head is more erect and
the neck is more developed. The eyelids almost cover the eyes. External ears are evident.
Your baby now moves its body and limbs. This movement may be seen during an ultrasound
test. The crown-to-rump length of the embryo is 0.9 inch to 1.2 inches (22 to 30 mm). This
is close to the size of a medium green olive.
WEEK
10
Most congenital malformations occur before the end of Week 10. By the end of the 10th
week, development of the organ systems and the body are well underway and your baby is
beginning to look more human. By this week the umbilical cord is fully developed. The
brain of the fetus has grown at a tremendous rate over the last four weeks so its head
still looks disproportionate to the rest of the body. The crown to rump length of your
growing baby is about 1.25 to 1.68 inches
WEEK
11
Fetal growth is rapid at this time. The head is almost half the entire length of the baby.
As it extends, the chin raises from the chest and the neck develops and lengthens.
Distinguishing features of the external genitalia are beginning to appear. The fingernails
also appear. The crown to rump length of your baby is 1.75 to 2.4 inch (44 to 60 mm).
Fetal weight is about 0.3 ounce (8 gms).
WEEK
12
In this week, you will probably be able to hear your baby's heart beat. You can hear your
baby's heartbeat through a doppler which magnifies the sound of baby's heartbeat. The
fingers and toes have separated and nails are growing. The external genitalia are
beginning to show definite signs of male or female sex characteristics. The nervous system
has developed further. The amount of amniotic fluid is increasing. The crown to rump
length is almost 2.5 inches (61mm). Baby weighs between 0.3 and 0.5 ounce (9 to 13 gms).
