Jaundice mean yellowish discoloration of the skin and it is a inflammation of the liver.
Jaundice is of two types :
a. |
Viral Hepatitis A (commonly known as Infectious Hepatitis) |
b. |
Viral Hepatitis B : In children Viral Hepatitis is more
common than Hepatitis B |
Symptoms
a. |
The child in the initial stages develops aversion to food and
tendency to vomit. |
b. |
Later the child develops mild to moderate fever, complete
dislike for food and vague abdominal pain. |
c. |
The child passes highly colored urine and pale coloured
stools. |
d. |
The eyes and later the skin of the body acquires a yellowish
coloration, which may even stain the body clothes yellow. |
Treatment
a. |
Rest in bed with plenty of fluids (boiled, filtered water) |
b. |
Avoid fried and spicy food. Encourage intake of
carbhohydrates and sugar products. |
c. |
Plenty of glocuse, coconut water and fruit juices. |
d. |
Certain drugs can be given which help in the regeneration of
liver cells. |
e. |
In cases of persistent vomitting, certain drugs can be given
to stop the vomitting. |
Preventive Methods
a. |
Since it is a water borne infection, it is advisable to drink
boiled, filtered water. Raw foods should be cleaned properly before consumption. |
b. |
Preventive injections can be given, both for Hepatitis A and
Hepatitis B in the infancy and childhood which gives life long immunity |
c. |
Proper rest in bed and diet control should be done after an
attack of Hepatitis to prevent recurrence. |
